Food Ministry
The Morningside Neighborhood Food Cupboard grew out of a Vacation Bible School mission project in 2018. The children decorated the cupboard and brought donations of non-perishable foods to fill it. It is now maintained by the Westminster Deacons and has grown to be our main community service project.
The area in which Westminster is located was designated by the USDA in 2019 as “low income and/or low access to healthy food sources within a half mile”, in other words, a food desert. When the pandemic arrived, the need became even greater. Currently, the cupboard is filled twice a day and is available for people to take what they need. Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, and grants from the United Way and MRHD, we estimate that 67,000 items have been distributed since the beginning of the food cupboard. The response from neighbors living near Westminster has been very positive; some even add items to the cupboard on their own.
The Deacons couldn’t continue this ministry without a great deal of help from our volunteers: those who fill the cupboard, those who pack the bags for the cupboard fillers, and those who shop for the food, working hard to make the best use of every dollar. Donations of food or money can be made any time. Monetary contributions can be made by mail, in person, or via PayPal. In addition, on the second Sunday of each month the loose offering is designated for the food cupboard.
“ And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
